Kayaking in Elkhorn Slough

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

C, Nick and I went kayaking down near Monterey one foggy Sunday. There was a large fire near Santa Cruz at the time, so the air was hazy and smelled of smoke. Besides that it was a lot of fun and we saw lots of sea otters, sea lions and seals. The way the trip works is that you start in the harbor and then head inland for about 5 miles before turning around. Low tide occurred about halfway through our trip, we had to fight the current on way back towards the harbor. We were on the water for about 4 hours and although I wouldn't do the same area again, it was a lot of fun. I would definitely bring a camera with a longer zoom next time though to get better photos.

Here are a few photos. The sun came out for a few minutes here and there but it was smokey and grey for the most part.

Hatchbacks Rule

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

Businesses are downsizing, which means lots of cheap office furniture on Craigslist. We managed to fit an enormous corner desk and two filing cabinets in the car yesterday thanks to the beauty of hatchbacks, side streets and bungie cords.

Playing Possum

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

We were visited by a marsupial last week. I was sitting in the office and Lola was out in the backyard when I heard her bark once. It was strange, because she's either silent or barks psychotically when a squirrel runs by. When I got out there, she was alternating between barking at a pile of fur on the ground and cocking her head at it. I chased her away from the animal and then brought her inside before trying to figure out what was going on.

The furry mound turned out to an opossum playing dead. I'd bet that it was looking for food in the yard when I had suddenly opened the office door for Lola and it didn't have time to get away. Not being sure whether it was dead or just pretending to be,  I watched it for awhile but could luckily see it's eyes moving. When we went out in the morning to check on it, it was gone.

Playing dead works!

Incredible movies from flickr. These are two of my favorites. Lola's squirrel hunting strategy has an uncanny resemblance to the wolf's.

Update (Sept 12, 2009): Looks like the videos were pulled from Flickr. You can find them on a very poorly organized website here.
